The Power and Pleasures of Play with Tina Bruce & Chris Pascal

**Exclusively for Birmingham Early Years Practitioners** - A session on reflective pedagogy with a focus on the power and pleasures of play!

Professor Tina Bruce (CBE) and Professor Chris Pascal (OBE) will lead this session on reflective pedagogy, exploring the Power and Pleasures of Play.

They will present their recent research with the Froebel Trust, which led to the development of a reflective tool called Reflection with Guidance. The session will describe this tool and introduce a key element that invites practitioners to reflect on the deep importance of play and how it can be observed in children’s explorations from their earliest days.

Participants will also be introduced to the Layers of Play Framework—a resource designed to support ‘play-full analysis’ of young children. Video clips of children at play will be used to enable attendees to engage with the framework in practice.

Important notice: This session is exclusively for practitioners working in Birmingham Local Authority. Please ensure you complete the booking form fully to ensure your booking is accepted.

If you have any further questions about this session, please email the BEYN Coordinators: Clare Williams & Sue Bennett (info@birminghamearlyyearsnetworks.org)

About the speakers

Professor Tina Bruce (CBE)

Tina Bruce trained as a primary teacher at the Froebel Educational Institute, now part of University of Roehampton. She went on to become a Froebelian educator guided by principles that promote a holistic approach to teaching young children.

Tina has played an instrumental role in laying the foundations of early education as co-ordinator of the Early Years Advisory Group to successive government childcare ministers for 10 years.

In 2008, she was awarded a CBE for services to early years education. Her hugely influential articles and books address key Froebelian themes such as literacy, play and creativity.

Professor Chris Pascal (OBE)

Chris Pascal specialises in early childhood research and evaluation projects using mixed methods, which are flexible in approach and close to practice.

Currently, she is President of the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) and was previously President of the British Association for Early Childhood Education from 1994-1997 (and is now Vice President). She has also done extensive work at government level to support the development of early years policy, has served as a ministerial advisor, and an Early Years Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Education.

Chris has written extensively on early childhood development and the quality of early education services and served as an Expert Advisor to Tickell’s review of the EYFS.

In the past 3 years, she has delivered a number of early years policy and evidence reviews for clients, including The Sutton Trust, Teach First, and Early Education.
