Language Learning Reflection & Planning Tool

Our Language Learning Reflection & Planning Tool (LLR&PT) has been developed by the BEYN team for use by Birmingham early years settings and schools.

It is based on the Communication Supporting Classroom Observation Tool (CSCOT) developed by Professor Julie Dockrell and colleagues, with adaptations made for Birmingham’s early years context.

The LLR&PT has been developed to support early years practitioners to notice and record current language-supporting practices across three key areas:

  1. Environments: physical environment, resources, and materials

  2. Opportunities: routines and experiences

  3. Interactions: adult roles and strategies

Suggested Use

  • Part or the whole tool can be used in an observation of a room by someone other than the adult working with the children.

  • It is recommended that the observation takes place during a ‘typical’ session and should be a minimum of 30 mins for part of the tool, and up to one hour for the whole tool to be completed.

  • It is designed to stimulate reflection, act as a starting point for professional dialogue, and inform quality improvement planning.

  • It is not expected that you will see all elements in one observation.

  • The term ‘learning space’ is used to encompass all schools and settings.

Practitioners are encouraged to reflect on and analyse the information to help them identify and articulate:

  • Areas of effective practice to celebrate and maintain

  • Areas of practice to prioritise for development

While this tool may not capture all elements of provision and practice, it provides a common, accessible framework to guide reflection and planning.

The Language Learning Reflection & Planning Tool will also be used with leaders, managers, and practitioners as part of our bespoke in-setting support, offered by our team of Early Education Advisors.

As part of this support, we have developed additional resources to strengthen each aspect of the tool.

If you are interested in bespoke support for your setting focused on strengthening your knowledge, skills, and understanding of your role in promoting high-quality communication and language development, please fill out our request for support form.
