Early Years Essentials

Designed to inspire and empower practitioners, 'Early Years Essentials' sessions provide an introduction or further insight into key early years themes, including child development, play, building positive relationships and interactions, observation, assessment and planning, behaviour and emotional regulation, and working effectively with parents and families.

Session 1: Introduction to Early Years Essentials

This session offered a dynamic introduction to our Early Years Essentials programme, unpacking the series layout, key topics, and practical insights from 50 Things and BEYN resources, including the EYFS. It showed how the sessions build confidence, strengthen practitioner–parent connections, and expand tools for impactful early years practice.

Language Learning Reflection & Planning Tool (LLR&PT)

The Language Learning Reflection & Planning Tool (LLR&PT) is a practical reflection tool that helps early years practitioners review how well their environment, interactions, and daily practice support children’s language development and plan clear next steps to strengthen their communication and language practice.

Session 1: Understanding the Purpose of the Tool

This session explored why the LLR&PT exists, how it supports high‑quality language practice, and what it looks like in action. It helped attendees gain a clear understanding of how the tool can support your team’s reflective culture.

Transition Toolkit

'Transition Toolkit' is a practical, child-centred webinar series exploring how to support children through everyday and milestone transitions, including starting school. Together, we reflect on how strong relationships, partnership working, and an understanding of the unique child can help to create positive, inclusive transition experiences for all.

Session 1: Supporting the Unique Child Through Everyday Transitions

This session explored different types of transitions and highlighted the importance of placing each unique child at the centre. It focused on how knowing children well supports positive everyday transitions, drawing on shared practice from settings across the city.

WellComm in Practice

You’ve got the pack, you’ve started a screening, but what next? How can you get the most out of WellComm whilst making it work for you and your setting? Our ‘WellComm in Practice’ sessions offer real, practical advice and the sharing of ideas, supported by the Birmingham Speech and Language Therapy team and Early Years Consultants.

Session 1: Implementing WellComm in Practice

This session focused on how to implement WellComm confidently in your setting, exploring the ‘Big Book of Ideas’, and considering effective ways to work with parents.

Session 2: WellComm Babies

This session is aimed at Baby Room practitioners and looked in detail at Sections 1, 2 and 3 of the Big Book of Ideas. It introduced strategies for effective interactions with younger children and babies, and offered space to share ideas and learning.
