Growing Great Practice: Why Professional Development and Reflection Matter in Early Years
At BEYN, we stay curious, keep learning, and reflect honestly to strengthen practice across the city.
Across Birmingham, early years practitioners are working every day to create environments where children feel safe, curious, and ready to learn.
Within the Birmingham Early Years Networks (BEYN), we know that great practice doesn’t happen by chance — it grows from ongoing professional development and thoughtful reflection.
That’s why engaging in ongoing professional development isn’t just a nice‑to‑have; it’s a core part of being an effective, thoughtful practitioner.
When practitioners engage in learning together and take time to reflect on what it means for their own setting, the impact reaches far beyond individual rooms or teams. It strengthens the whole system.
Staying Curious through BEYN Learning Opportunities
Professional development is at the heart of BEYN. Whether practitioners join a network session, explore new research, collaborate with colleagues, or engage in coaching, each opportunity helps us stay connected to what matters most for children.
BEYN learning keeps our thinking current and rooted in evidence. It supports practitioners to build confidence, deepen subject knowledge, and develop shared language across the city.
When we learn together, we create consistency through shared understanding and shared purpose.
Why Planned Continuing Professional Development [CPD] Matters for a Thriving Early Years Team
Thoughtfully planning CPD ensures every member of the team can access the right learning at the right time.
A well‑sequenced offer recognises that practitioners are at different stages of experience, confidence and responsibility, so their development needs won’t be identical.
When CPD is mapped out intentionally, it becomes a pathway rather than a collection of one‑off sessions: new staff build strong foundations, developing practitioners deepen and refine their practice, and experienced colleagues stretch into leadership or specialist areas.
This approach not only strengthens individual practice but also builds collective consistency, shared language and a culture of professional growth.
Ultimately, planned CPD helps teams feel valued, supported and equipped to deliver the highest‑quality experiences for children and families.
Reflection: Turning Learning into Meaningful Change
Professional development alone doesn’t shift practice. Reflection is what transforms new ideas into real change for children.
Within BEYN, reflective practice helps practitioners:
Make sense of new learning
Question assumptions
Celebrate strengths
Identify areas to refine
Stay focused on what children are showing us
Reflection encourages intentional practice. It helps us move from “I attended training” to “Here’s what I changed, and here’s the difference it made.”
This is where impact becomes visible — in children’s engagement, language, wellbeing, and confidence.
Learning + Reflection = System Impact
When BEYN practitioners combine professional development with reflective practice, the effect is powerful.
We move beyond simply attending training and begin shaping environments, interactions, and experiences that genuinely support children’s learning and development.
This isn’t about ticking boxes.
It’s about building a culture where practitioners feel valued, supported, and inspired to keep growing. It’s about ensuring every child, in every ward of the city, benefits from adults who are committed to learning with intention and reflecting with honesty.
A Shared Commitment to Growth
BEYN is more than a network — it’s a community of practitioners who believe in continuous improvement.
By staying open to learning and taking time to reflect, we strengthen not only our own practice but the collective quality of early years provision across Birmingham.
Together, we grow great practice. Together, we make a difference.
How to Use Our Professional Development Planner and Record & Reflection Sheet
Our Professional Development Planner for the 2026–27 academic year brings together the full BEYN offer in one place.
It outlines our universal programme, including:
Webinar Wednesday: weekly online learning sessions
One-off specialist seminars and workshops led by respected early years voices
Summary of in‑setting support available through Enhanced Projects or Bespoke Support
By using the link to our live online events calendar, you can explore each universal session in more detail. This includes information about the focus, format, and target audience, helping you plan who in your team would benefit most.
The intention is that there is something for everyone — from colleagues new to early years to experienced practitioners and leaders.
We encourage you to use the planner to map out a CPD plan for each member of your team for 2026–27, ensuring that professional development is purposeful, sequenced and tailored to individual needs.
You can print the calendar and display it in your staff room. This allows you to add the dates of any in‑setting support you’re receiving through our enhanced or bespoke offer, as well as any CPD you plan to attend from other partners or organisations.
Alongside this, our Record & Reflection Sheet supports practitioners to capture what they attended, what they learned, how their thinking shifted, and what actions they took as a result. It also prompts reflection on the impact of those actions.
Over time, this becomes a valuable personal learning record and can be used within ongoing supervision or professional discussions.
We hope you find the planner and record & reflection sheet useful for you and your team — let us know how you’ve been using it and the impact it’s having!
